Huerfano County was one of the 17 original counties when Colorado became a state in 1876. The word "Huerfano" (War-Fe-No) translated, means "Orphan." It was named after the lone volcanic butte 7 miles north of Walsenburg on I-25.
Walsenburg is named in honor of Fred Walsen, an early pioneer, who opened the first coal mines. Black Diamond refers to coal. The mines are now closed.

A big Thank You to all that helped and participated in this years Black Diamond Jubilee. Again, it was a success with plans beginning for next years event.
The City of Walsenburg Casino Night assisted by the Chamber of Commerce raised over $10,000 to be matched by the Gates Foundation to assist the Walsenburg Wild Waters Aquatic Park. It was a FUN night for all that were involved.
The annual Chamber Awards Banquet will be coming up in late September. More information will be forthcoming soon.
You are invited to stay cool this summer with a visit to the Walsenburg Wild Waters Aquatic Park located on W. 7th St. There's many water features plus a concession stand to enjoy hours of fun.
